Lurking below the Sparks Marina lake’s surface is a twin-engine F-4 Phantom, the first – and only – item deposited at the bottom of the lake for what was once proposed to be a regional dive park.
In 2000, then-Parks and Recreation Director Stan Sherer told the Reno Gazette Journal, “We re trying to create an underwater park in addition to what s above ground to give divers a destination site when they re puttering around down there.”
But talks of submerging other items, including a school bus, a sailboat and a railcar, never materialized, and “there is no intention to make it more of a dive area,” said Sparks Parks and Recreation Acting Director Tony Pehle. ....

The COVID-19 baby boom didn t happen. Almost from the beginning of the pandemic, experts wondered if Americans would get bored with Netflix and breadmaking long enough to get pregnant, but an AP analysis of the early data says no, we actually stuck with Netflix and bread.
Births for all of 2020 were down 4.3% from 2019, the data indicates. More tellingly, births in December 2020 and in January and February 2021 nine months or more after the spring 2020 lockdowns were down 6.5%, 9.3% and 10% respectively, compared with the same months a year earlier, writes the AP s Mike Stobbe. ....

Fishing is allowed year-round in Nevada, but spring is generally recognized as the start of fishing season and to that end, the Sparks Marina received its first stocking of the year on Wednesday.
The Nevada Department of Wildlife put 3,000 rainbow trout in the Marina, most in the 9-10 inch, 1-pound range.
NDOW Western Region education supervisor Zac Campbell said the plan is to stock about 88,000 fish in all 20 area urban named ponds, streams and the Truckee River this spring and summer. ....
