PEORIA – Fire Chief Tony Ardis will retire next week, after about 18 months as the top official at the Peoria Fire Department, City Hall announced Thursday. His last day will be May 14, and he will replaced by Assistant Chief James Bachman, who also began with the department in 1994 and has risen through the ranks. He is a state-certified hazardous materials technician and a graduate of Northern Illinois University. Departmental succession plans typically elevate the assistant chief to the position after a chief departs. Bachman will be the city s fifth fire chief in a span of roughly six years. Kent Tomblin retired in 2015 after a roughly eight-year stint as chief. He was succeeded by his assistant chief, Chuck Lauss, who served for just over two years until leaving in January 2018 and later becoming fire chief in Urbana. Lauss was succeeded by his assistant chief, Ed Olehy, who served in the job from February 2018 to November 2019. ....
PEORIA History was made Tuesday night as the first woman and the first Black person was sworn in as Peoria s mayor. Rita Ali beamed broadly as the oath of office was administered to her by newly elected City Clerk Stefanie Tarr, who then handed her the gavel while the room erupted in applause. I would be remiss if I did not mention the historic meaning of today. The city has elected its first woman after 185 years, Ali said, before noting she was also the first Black person to wield the mayor s gavel. Her election, she hoped, would break down barriers and prejudices. ....

History was made in Peoria, Illinois Tuesday night as the city saw the first Black person and first woman to assume the role of Peoria’s mayor. Dr. Rita Ali was sworn in Tuesday night, after defeating her opponent Jim Montelongo in the election. Ali acknowledged the history she made during her remarks. “One of the root causes of prejudice is status inequality,” said Ali. “Electing me to this role helps to address that status inequality by putting a woman and person of color in a leadership role.” Many of the council members, new and old, expressed their vision of a brighter future for the city moving forward. ....
Zoom Peoria mayoral candidate Jim Montelongo filed a discovery recount request with the Peoria County Election Commission on Monday afternoon, shortly before the statutory deadline. On final count, Montelongo came just 43 votes short of claiming victory over Rita Ali in the closely-contested race to succeed outgoing Mayor Jim Ardis. Montelongo previously forecasted his move for a discovery recount in an April 20 press release. The recount could be used as part of a later court action to formally contest the election results if Montelongo chooses to go that route. The candidate has alleged the election commission mishandled mail-in ballots arriving after April 6, but the election commission defends its practices. ....
