His poems are essentially lyrical, poems of moods and feelings, though always filtered and moderated by his sharp intellect, which distinguished him from the romantic crowd. He was not a narrative poet either, though at times his poems tend to have narrative contexts, questions, conversations and colloquial expressions. It is difficult to compare him with any of his contemporaries, or those who lived and wrote before or after him. He modernised Tagore’s legacy by distilling his style; he could be imagistic like Jibanananda Das, but was rarely nostalgic ....
Poet Shankha Ghosh, the last of the Mohicans of the post-Jibanananda Das era of modern Bangla poetry, died from Covid-19 at the age of 89 at his residence in Kolkata today. Doyen of modern Bengali poetry, Jnanpith Award and Padma Bhushan Shankha Ghosh breathed his last on Wednesday morning,succumbing to COVID-19. He was 89. According to our sources, he was in home isolation after testing positive on April 14. His condition deteriorated since Tuesday evening. He was on ventilation since then and passed away at around 11 am today. Shankha Ghosh was considered one of the most popular poets in the post-Jibanananda Das era. His demise will create a void in the literary world. Sankha received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1977 for Babar-er Prarthana. He was honoured with a second Sahitya Akademi Award in 1999.
