It was a sloppy game played through sloppy weather, but the Miami Hurricanes collected a much-needed win Friday night over the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
A mundane, RBI groundout by Adrian Del Castillo in the eighth inning both personified the evening and effectively clinched UM’s 4-2 series-opening victory.
The Canes (25-15, 15-14 ACC) hit just .185 overall. They improved to 10-1 in non-conference games while remaining perfect against mid-major opponents.
“Pleased we got the win,” said Miami head coach Gino DiMare. “But know we are still trying to get this where we can play better baseball all the way around, and we need to.” ....

The Miami Hurricanes have lost two consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference series, against North Carolina and Boston College, and have dropped four of their past seven overall matchups.
For a team that was ranked No. 1 in the nation early in the season by major outlet Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, this is a disappointing stretch. And one that could prove costly come NCAA Tournament selection time.
So what has gone south since February, how can UM respond, and what remains uncertain in an uncharted season for the sport? ....

The Boston College Eagles welcomed the Hurricanes to the Harrington Athletics Village on Friday night and gave them a rude awakening, blowing them out 13-0 in what proved to be an uncharacteristic loss for Miami.
However, the Canes bounced back in Saturday afternoon’s action to even the series with a tightly contested battle that favored UM with a final score of 2-1.
Miami’s win was strongly backed by a strong, steady start from pitcher Alex McFarlane, who did what no other Hurricane was able to do Friday night: keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. ....

After struggling offensively the past two games, UM exploded for 14 hits against the UNC Tar Heels on Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The 8-1 win secured Gino DiMare’s 75th victory as head coach of the Hurricanes. Only three others in program history have achieved such a feat, and DiMare is the second-fastest to do so, taking just 112 games to reach the milestone.
Initially it looked as if the Tar Heels would cruise to another win when they jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. UNC’s Justice Thompson, who had gone a magnificent 4-for-7 in the past two games, continued his hot streak by hitting a double down the left-field line. Danny Serretti then singled to right field, which sent Thompson home and gave UNC (20-17, 14-13 ACC) a 1-0 lead. ....
