Print article As COVID-19 case counts in Alaska begin to climb again, health officials say getting the state vaccinated is the best way to tamp down spread but the pace of vaccination is slowing. ”This is the crux of where we’re at right now with this pandemic,” state epidemiologist Dr. Joe McLaughlin said this week. “We need to get people vaccinated.” Health experts have billed high rates of vaccination as a ticket out of the pandemic, and Alaska last month became the first state to offer vaccinations for all residents 16 and older. The Alaskans most eager to get the vaccine have already received their shots. Now, the new challenge that state officials say they’re facing is how to reach a sometimes more hesitant group of individuals who might get a vaccine if the process were simpler. ....

Alaska on Wednesday announced a major expansion of its list of those eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. It now includes Alaskans 55 and older, as well as people over 16 who are essential workers, live in multigenerational homes, are considered potentially “high-risk” for severe illness or live in a community where homes lack water and sewer systems. The newly eligible group can now sign up for a vaccine appointment, health department officials said in a statement Wednesday morning. ....
Print article Gov. Mike Dunleavy has tested positive for COVID-19 and has mild symptoms, his office said Wednesday. Dunleavy’s office previously said he had come in close contact with a COVID-positive person on Saturday and would quarantine at home as a precaution. “Because the governor has been in quarantine during his infectious period, there are no known close contacts at this time,” the governor’s office said in a statement Wednesday. Dunleavy tested negative for COVID on Sunday but began feeling unwell Tuesday night, his office said. He took another test Wednesday morning and it was positive, his office said. ....
