The Saw movies are the Fast & Furious of torture-porn franchises, as dedicated to doubling down on their original conceit as they are to their sincerely applied, ever-expanding lore. In the series’ ninth outing, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, someone appears to be following in the footsteps of The Jigsaw Killer, everyone’s favorite murderous philosophy major. Jigsaw has actually been dead since Saw III in 2006, but Spiral raises doubts about that statement: It’s the series’ second soft reboot in recent years, and a key question teased in its trailers is whether its grisly puzzle-murders are the work of a copycat, or someone connected to the original killer, John Kramer (Tobin Bell). It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume the latter, given how much the people behind the Saw series care about its sprawling continuity. ....
‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’ Review: It’s A Whole New Game The original Jigsaw Killer died in Saw III. That didn’t stop the franchise from cranking out five more sequels, each one twisting itself into tighter and tighter narrative pretzels to explain how the late John Kramer and his apprentices were still torturing people from beyond the grave. No matter how absurd or labyrinthian they got, the Saws kept making money every year, at least for a while. So why not another? And here we are at Jigsaw. As the title suggests, this entry takes a slightly different approach to the material. Although almost every previous ....
Spiral: From the Book of Saw s Brutal Opening Scene Released Online ✖ With just days to go before the release of the film, and several other clips already living online, Lionsgate has released the full opening scene for Spiral: From the Book of Saw. The scene reveals the first gnarly new trap that will be seen in the film while also giving us a tease of what the new killer s motives and modus operandi are as a Jigsaw Killer copycat. Publicly there hasn t yet been a name given to the new killer in the film, but it s worth noting that the killer concludes his messages to his first victim with a very familiar line from the Saw series, Live or die, make your choice. ....
The screenplay is based on Rock’s concept, and the comedian also serves as executive producer on the project. “Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision, and passion for this classic horror franchise,” Lionsgate’s Joe Drake said, per Variety. “When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in,” Drake previously told TheWrap. “âSawâ is one of the highest-grossing horror franchises of all time and itâs one of Lionsgateâs most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind-bending and intense as all the previous âSaw films.â Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creati ....
Long-running horror series need to freshen things up to keep going as they head towards double figures. A Nightmare on Elm Street went meta and then crossed over with Friday the 13th in its seventh and eighth movies, while the latter franchise headed to space in its tenth outing. Halloween decided to ignore all other sequels and have a direct sequel to the first in the series in its ninth movie (ignoring the Rob Zombie efforts). Having released its final chapter in the seventh movie, Saw attempted a reinvention with 2017 s Jigsaw to mixed results, and now it s gone the full soft-reboot route with ....
