This will “impact its ability to fulfill its current mandate and conclude the judicial proceedings in the two cases currently before the Tribunal, the Ayyash et al. case (STL-11-01) and the Ayyash case (STL-18-10),” the court added in a statement, referring to the case of the Rafik Hariri murder and the case of the attacks on Elias Murr, Marwan Hamadeh and Georges Hawi. ....
Friday, 26 February, 2021 - 07:30 Washington - Ali Barada United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres extended on Thursday the mandate of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) for a further period of two years. “The UNSC extended the Tribunal’s mandate from 1 March 2021 for a further period of two years, or until the completion of the cases before the STL, if sooner, or until the exhaustion of available funds, if sooner. The extension is in accordance with Security Council resolution 1757 (2007),” a statement by UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said. Guterres reaffirmed the UN commitment to support the STL in the fight against impunity for the crimes under its jurisdiction, in order to bring those responsible to justice. ....
NEW YORK: The UN Secretary-General has extended the mandate of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon from March 1 for a further two years, “or until the completion of the cases before the Special Tribunal, if sooner, or the exhaustion of available funds, if sooner,” the secretary-general’s spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric announced on Thursday. The mandate of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, which is based near The Hague in the Netherlands, is to try those accused of carrying out the Feb. 14, 2005, attack in Beirut, which killed 22 people including former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and injured 226 more, Dujarric explained. “The trial in absentia of four individuals indicted over the killing began in January 2014. On Aug. 18, 2020, Salim Jamil Ayyash was convicted on five counts related to the attack. In the same judgment, the three other accused, Hassan Habib Merhi, Hussein Hassan Oneissi and Assad Hassan Sabra were found not guilty,” he continued. ....

Lokman Slim was found dead in his rental car on Thursday morning after he had gone missing in southern Lebanon, a Hezbollah stronghold, the night before. The powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah is an armed group with political representation in Parliament. A vocal critic of the group, Slim had received threats in December 2019, after its supporters accused him of promoting normalisation with Israel. His assassination is reminiscent of that of other outspoken writers and activists over the years. ....
