Fall River fire stations are now "safe stations" for people facing addiction

FALL RIVER People dealing with substance abuse can now be directly connected to recovery resources by going to Fall River fire stations, thanks to a new program that’s the first of its kind in Massachusetts.
“This program will make the first step of recovery easier and more accessible to those who don’t know where to turn,” Mayor Paul Coogan said at a press conference announcing the program on Wednesday at the city’s North Fire Station.
A new sign outside each of the city’s six fire stations marks them as “safe stations” for people dealing with addiction. Between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. each day, anyone can go into a station and request help. Members of the department will bring in a recovery expert who will help them seek treatment from several organizations including Steppingstone Incorporated, Stanley Street Treatment and Rehabilitation, Boston Medical Center and St. Anne’s Hospital. ....

Moderna vaccine now be given to SSTAR staff in Fall River

FALL RIVER Moderna has come to SSTAR.
The first batch of COVID-19 vaccine doses manufactured by the Cambridge-based bio-tech company Moderna was delivered Tuesday to Fall River’s non-profit Stanley Street Treatment and Resources.
“We got 100 yesterday and surprise, surprise, another 100 today,” SSTAR chief executive Nancy Paull said on Wednesday.
Paull said 20 of her employees got a shot in the arm on Tuesday and another 20 were set to receive the same by the end of Wednesday.
She said beginning next Monday 40 employees each weekday will take the first of two Moderna vaccine shots inside the central building of SSTAR’s main campus at 400 Stanley St. ....
