Updated: 12:58 PM EST Mar 1, 2021 WXII12.com Web Staff City officials in Winston-Salem held a brief ceremony Monday morning to unveil an honorary street sign to mark the 70th anniversary of the Winston-Salem Fire Department’s first Black firefighters.The firefighters reported for duty on March 1, 1951, at the original Fire Station No. 4 located at 214 N. Dunleith Ave. Monday s ceremony was held near that site at the corner of East Third Street and Dunleith Avenue. The old fire station has since been converted to a church. Speakers included Mayor Allen Joines, members of City Council and fire Chief Trey Mayo. The honorary street sign designates that block of Dunleith as “First Eight Avenue,” and honors the city’s first eight Black firefighters: Raphael Black, Willie Carter, Lester Ervin, John “Hank” Ford, Robert Greer, John Meredith, George Penn and John “Roi” Thomas.
