Trump's acquittal proved it — if we want real democracy, we need to get rid of the Senate

The recent vote to acquit Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial is an excellent reason to abolish the antiquated legislative body. Simply put, the Senate has outlived any usefulness it once had, and we’re long overdue a change if we want proper democracy. To be clear, the acquittal of Trump itself wasn’t surprising, given that numerous Senate Republicansvoted to preemptively end the trial before House impeachment managers even got a. ....

Book Review: ‘Rural Rebellion – How Nebraska Became a Republican Stronghold’
Ross Benes’ political memoir lays out the failure of Democrats to reach rural constituents in Nebraska. Reviewer Matt L. Barron offers some solutions, along with his reflections on Benes’ “wonderful new book.”

When I say Nebraska, you say what? Cornhusker football? The wonderful writing of Willa Cather? The Sandhills? How about a ruby-red state about as inhospitable for Democrats as Mars is for humans?
The chapter on Nebraska from my
Almanac of American Politics 1980 opens with this: “By almost every measurement – its preference in presidential elections, its congressional delegations over the years, its state politics – Nebraska has usually been the nation’s most Republican state.” So why is this? Some answers are to be found in a wonderful new book by Ross Benes, ....

Editorial Roundup: Nebraska

We should, though, avoid being the outlier in things critical to our residents’ well-being. For example, for several months last year, at Gov. Pete Ricketts’ behest, Nebraska was the only state not taking advantage of maximum food stamp benefits extended by the federal government because of the pandemic. Thankfully, Ricketts relented in November as virus cases surged.
Today, because of a statutory ban, ours is the only state that deprives unemployment benefits to workers covered by DACA - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. About 300 workers laid off from their jobs because of the pandemic were affected last year.
State Sen. Mike McDonnell is working to change the Nebraska law that bars these younger immigrants from receiving jobless benefits if they are otherwise eligible. State Labor Commissioner John Albin said this week at a hearing that wording of McDonnell’s bill would put Nebraska afoul of federal law, but promised to work with the Omaha senator on accepta ....

Matthew Mangino Senate cowards of Capitol Hill

MATTHEW MANGINO
Harvard Law School Professor Laurence Tribe referred, in a recent tweet, to a group of GOP senators who intended to object to the certification of the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the “Treacherous Eleven.”
After the capitol was overrun by insurrectionists, fomented by the President of the United States, only six senators continued their cowardly kowtowing to the lead insurrectionist Donald Trump. The “Seditious Six,” led by Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Howley of Missouri also included Roger Marshall (KS), John Kennedy (LA), Cindy Hyde-Smith (MS) and Tommy Tuberville (AL).
Sedition is a federal crime  “Whoever incites, sets on foot, assists, or engages in any rebellion or insurrection against the authority of the United States or the laws thereof, or gives aid or comfort thereto, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than ten years, or both; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United ....
