July 18, 1889: The Comet reported several interesting pieces of information about Johnson City area residents.
“Mr. Ed Lynn is the new Secretary and Treasurer at the Johnson City Foundry and Machine Works.”
“Mrs. Sam Simons and daughter, Lottie May, have returned from Cranberry. The child is improved in health.”
“Gen. Wilder yesterday deeded the lot on which the new Baptist Church is built at Roan Mountain, and then gave ten dollars in cash.”
“Mayor Ike T. Jobe calls the board together every few nights now and is settling down to work nicely. He presides with dignity and keeps both eyes open for Johnson City interests.” ....

July 17, 1890: The Comet reported information about recent census findings regarding the growth of Johnson City. “Johnson City is no longer a village even in the minds of those who are so glad that they will not see.”
“The census is completed, and four thousand, one hundred and sixty-nine people are now living where, ten years ago, only six hundred and eighty-five lived.”
“It is indeed a wonderful growth, and the most conservative citizens were surprised at the figures, as they had claimed only about three thousand and five hundred. Properly speaking, the increase of Johnson City’s population in the last two years has been more than doubled and nearly trebled, as the census which was taken by the city in 1888 will show, when there were to be found within the corporate limits only sixteen hundred people.” ....

Today In Johnson City History: Feb. 3


Feb. 3, 1895: The Knoxville Journal, with a dateline of Johnson City, informed readers, “W.A. Truslow was arrested here to-day (sic) by Postoffice (sic) inspector (sic) Baird, charged with sending slanderous and threatening letter through the mails to J.E. Crandall, who was president of the First National bank (sic) that failed here last November. His trial was continued until 9 o’clock Monday morning and he was released on his own recognition.”
Feb. 3, 1896: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported on a possible new college in the area. “A public meeting was held in the opera house last night in the interest of a large college, which is in contemplation for this city. The leading citizens were out and a subscription of $1,000 was secured in the hall. About $5,000 has been asked for which will be made up beyond a doubt.” ....
