Napoleon’s lost legions were the cunning instigators of some great escapes from Perth prison.
The prison’s old C Hall was part of the original Perth prison which housed the French prisoners when it was known as the Depot.
Built in 1811-12, its original purpose was to accommodate 7,000 French prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. ....

Facing scrutiny from Commissioner Laura Meier and Vice Chair Elaine Powell, Mecklenburg County leaders on Wednesday defended their decision to temporarily close parks at dusk.
The closures are in response to Health Director Gibbie Harris’ directive urging residents to only engage in essential activities.
The park closures at dusk impact residents who wish to play basketball and tennis on lighted courts because they can’t get to the parks during the day due to work or school. Powell said she has received hundreds of emails on the topic. ....

Over Mecklenburg County 5,000 seniors schedule COVID vaccines


Mecklenburg County s top health officials have been asking the community for patience in the coming days and weeks.
We have limited access to the vaccine, Mecklenburg County Public Health Director Gibbie Harris said. We want to make sure that when people come in, there s a vaccine available to them.
Some 5,186 seniors are scheduled for their first shots through January. It means Mecklenburg County Health is booked for the month. It s frustrating for many who did all they could to get an appointment.
When numbers don t work and websites don t work, where do we go from there, said Betty Tomlinson, who tried to schedule her appointment but had a hard time getting through.  ....

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Gaston and Mecklenburg counties are jointly pleading with North Carolina senators to take action and have flexibility with the latest version of the coronavirus relief bill.
The Democratic chairman of the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners and the Republican chairman of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners sent a joint letter to North Carolina’s two U.S. Senators, urging them to lobby for a coronavirus relief package that provides flexibility for local governments to strategically respond to the needs caused by COVID-19 in 2021. ....
