SGA confirms nominations, passes bill to modify legislative branch statutes

The University of Georgia Student Government Association held its first Senate meeting of the 34th administration this Tuesday. During the meeting, senators passed a bill to modify the SGAâs legislative branch statutes and confirm new legislative cabinet and rules committee members.
According to the bill, the purpose of the legislation is to remove definitions that hindered the President of the Senate and the Senate to effectively legislate.
The call to modify the language of the statutes is a reverse on a bill passed by the 33rd administration, which initially put these definitions in place. The 33rd administrationâs bill passed back in March, with its intended goal being to clearly explain the purposes of Senate staff positions and make the legislative branch more effective. ....

SGA, Office of Sustainability host Earth Week fair, community clean-up

The University of Georgia Student Government Association and Office of Sustainability collaborated to host an Earth Day Fair this Wednesday on the Tate West Lawn with the goal of promoting ways for students to get involved in eco-friendly organizations both on campus and in the Athens-Clarke County community.
Multiple organizations participated in this event, including the Sustainability Certificate with the Office of Sustainability, Campus Kitchen, Concrete Jungle, the UGA Food Pantry, the SGA Professional Clothing Closet, UGArden, the Lunchbox Garden Project, University Union, Speak Out for Species and UGA Swap Shop.
The fair was held next to UGAâs Farm to Campus Market, which has visited every Wednesday in March and April in front of the Zell B. Miller Learning Center. ....

Caroline Dodson, a sophomore public relations major, noticed at popular stops like Tate and the main library, students have to crowd around the bus when it arrives to get a seat. She said these stops seem the busiest around mid-afternoon.
âSome of the seats on the bus donât seem socially distant at all; you are right next to each other. If they wanted to be 6 feet apart, they could change that,â Dodson said.
Routes were shortened to make buses more frequent throughout campus, said Todd Berven, interim director for Transportation and Parking Services. This helped with the reduced occupancy that was caused by the pandemic guidelines. ....

Outgoing SGA President Asim Ahmed said his confidence in the new executives is in ânot only how capable and impressive they are, but also how much they love this university.â
Ahmed said some of the accomplishments of the previous administration included lobbying with the state legislature to gain more opportunity for those in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program to attend state colleges, ensuring the option of on-campus voting and working with UGAâs Enterprise Information Technology Services to better accommodate virtual learning due to the coronavirus pandemic.
âI believe that your work to give a voice to previously underrepresented segments of the student body has been particularly effective,â Jack Decker, the 33rd administrationâs attorney general, said to the outgoing administration. ....
