Ninth District Opportunity, along with some of its community partners, provided dozens of homeless and low-income people with resources for the new year.
The event, which took place outside of The Way on Bradford Street in Gainesville, was publicized to the homeless communities in the area as a place to grab a hot meal, a coat, some cold weather accessories and even a cell phone if they needed one, as well as a place to learn about benefits like Medicare and food stamps.
Medicare is very complex, said broker and independent advocate Kathleen Krueger. As people kind of living on the outskirts, they don t get the mailers, they don t feel like there is anybody they can talk to, they don t understand it. They also don t understand what they can get to help pay for their Medicare. ....

Society of St. Vincent de Paul
Thanks to very generous community support, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been able to aid almost 3,000 people suffering from the effects of COVID-19. During this nine month period, that is more than double the number of families helped in the entire year before the virus appeared, and with twice as much aid.
Financial support has come in the form of grants and donations: two COVID Relief Grants from North Georgia Community Foundation (April and December) and the SVdP Council of Atlanta, annual grants from United Way and Jackson EMC plus several grants from the Cresswind Community Foundation. Monetary donations from the parishioners at St. Michael Catholic Church and individuals in the community have also increased significantly during this period. ....

Georgia Power distributes 8,000 energy efficiency kits, 150,000 LED light bulbs across state

Georgia Power announced a recent distribution of 8,000 energy efficiency kits from the companyâs Energy Efficiency Program to income-qualified customers across the state.
The company also announced a distribution of nearly 150,000 ENERGY STAR LEDs through partnering food bank facilities. The energy efficiency kits and LED bulbs will provide assistance through free energy efficiency upgrades designed to save customers money and make their homes more efficient.
The kits include items such as LED light bulbs, single pack heat shrink wrap window kit, switch and outlet gaskets, furnace filter, caulk gun and 100% silicone clear caulk, V-Seal weather strip, foam tape for windows and pipe insulation wrap. ....

Attorney, philanthropist Phillip Sartain has died

Prominent Gainesville attorney and philanthropist Phillip Bond Sartain, known for his intelligence, his sense of humor and an unwavering commitment to his community, died peacefully Monday morning, his family said. He was 62.
Although an attorney by trade, Sartain is perhaps best known for his involvement with local organizations and charities, especially the Georgia Mountain Food Bank and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lanier.
Phillip was an intense guy, said friend and attorney Abb Hayes. Anything he was telling you about or discussing or going to get involved with, he was all in. He was passionate about politics. He loved writing his columns. Just a guy who had a lot of interests and passions, who made a huge impact on my life. ....
