(Photo by Nick Bragg/UGA) The Office of University Architects began implementing a Historic Preservation Master Plan to document and maintain UGA buildings 50 years and older on all campuses and across the state in April 2018. The plan had its origins four years earlier, when President Jere W. Morehead charged a steering committee, led by then-Dean Dan Nadenicek of the College of Environment and Design, to develop an overall plan to guide the University’s stewardship of its historic resources. After several years of hard work by the committee assisted by student researchers in conducting an extensive inventory of facilities across the state the plan was presented to the University in a public forum in March 2018. It received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation in 2019 and the Excellence in Preservation Service Award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 2020. ....

Eagle owner Richard Ramey The effort to protect the 122-year-old building that once housed the Atlanta Eagle stalled on Wednesday, delaying discussion of designating it as a historic landmark for at least two weeks. The Atlanta Urban Design Commission pressed pause after the building’s owner asked for more time to review the city’s application for landmark status. The city – and Historic Atlanta – wants to designate two buildings – 306 Ponce de Leon Avenue, which housed the Eagle until it closed in November, and 300 Ponce de Leon, vacant since the 1990s – as landmarks to protect them from being demolished. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms jump-started the process in mid-December. But Dennis Webb – an attorney for Shahzad Hashmi, the Gwinnett psychiatrist who owns both buildings – argued that they received two city reports about the landmark designation just a week before the meeting. ....

It was built in 1901 by a man named Wallace McCaw. According to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, he s the man who is credited with creating the vegetable shortening Crisco hence the house s namesake. ....
