Published February 1, 2021, 12:57 PM Tuesday, February 2, is the feast day of the highly revered Our Lady of Candles (Nuestra Senora dela Candelaria), the patroness of Western Visayas and Jaro, Iloilo. Feast masses will be celebrated at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral in Iloilo City in observance of the event. The traditional blessing of candles will be held. Devotees bring home the blessed candles in the belief that it will protect them against evil, harm, and misfortune. Saint John Paul II canonically crowned the miraculous image of Our Lady of Candles on his first visit to the country on February 21,1981, making it the only Marian image in Asia crowned by a Pontiff in person (by a papal saint). It is now enshrined at the Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral which was declared a national shrine during the Feast of Our Lady of Candles in 2012. ....

Across SM City Iloilo, artists collectively known as Baysulangpu (an anagram for the Hiligaynon word of pula nga subay or red ants) painted a 100-meter mural to look back at the year that was. The creation of the mural with lead artist Edmar Colmo represents the weeklong challenges and new discoveries in daily life. “It’s our life from Monday to Sunday as Covid-19 refuses to disappear,” says Arnold Almacen, one of the other artists and also a photojournalist. ....
