Pittsburgh Section 8 Discrimination Ordinance Is Before PA's Supreme Court This Week

After a years-long court battle, a case before Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court this week could have a big impact on affordable housing in Pittsburgh for tenants who rely on subsidized housing vouchers and landlords.
At issue is an ordinance passed by Pittsburgh City Council in 2015 forbidding landlords in the city from discriminating against tenants based on “source of income,” such as a Housing Choice Voucher, commonly referred to as a Section 8 voucher. Shortly after the ordinance passed, the Apartment Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh filed suit and the law has never been enforced.
Vouchers allow low-income tenants to rent a house or apartment on the private rental market. Generally, a tenant pays roughly one-third of their income toward the rent, and a government subsidy makes up the rest. However, many landlords won’t accept the vouchers and say they don’t want to deal with the bureaucracy and home inspections that come wit ....

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has presented the names of the first members of the city s new LGBTQIA+ Commission. City Council will take up the nominations tomorrow morning.
In a statement Monday, Peduto described the 17 nominees as “a strong and impressive group, and will be extremely helpful in informing policies on LGBTQIA+ matters across City government. The Commission will advise and make recommendations on policies that pertain to the LGBTQIA+ community.

Pittsburgh City-County Building lit for Pride Month Nearly nine months after Pittsburgh City Council voted to create its LGBTQIA+ Commission, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto announced appointees to the group designed to address challenges facing LGBTQIA+ residents and visitors.
On Feb. 8, Peduto named the people chosen for the LGBTQIA+ Commission, who will be introduced to Pittsburgh City Council on Feb. 9. The city originally put out a call for applicants to join the Commission in July 2020.
“This is a strong and impressive group, and will be extremely helpful in informing policies on LGBTQIA+ matters across city government,” says Peduto in a press release. ....
