Officials waive start rate for per diem nurses | News, Sports, Jobs

manich@leaderherald.com JOHNSTOWN The Fulton County Board of Supervisors on Monday temporarily waived the start rate for per diem nurses at the county Correctional Facility because the county is dealing with an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak there. Sheriff Richard Giardino reported a recent outbreak at the jail impacting both staff and inmates. The board on Monday at the County Office Building authorized Giardino to hire per diem registered nurses (2019 start rate $24.42 per hour, 2019 one-year rate $28.73 per hour); and per diem licensed practical nurses (2019 start rate $18.20 per hour, 2019 one-year rate $21.41 per hour) in “this instance only” to deal with the outbreak.

JOHNSTOWN The Fulton County Sheriff’s Department is upgrading its Tasers. Sheriff Richard Giardino recently requested permission to enter into a five-year contract with Axon to purchase upgraded Tasers for his department. The contract was tentatively approved by the Board of Supervisors’ Public Safety Committee, with the full board deciding Monday. “A total upgrade would end up costing $41.000,” Giardino said. Between 2016-2020, he said the sheriff’s office purchased and/or maintained nine Tasers for the department at a cost of $26,510 an average of about $5,302 per year. He said the sheriff’s office has a total of $10,600 regarding Tasers in its 2021 budget.

bohara@leaderherald.com ST. JOHNSVILLE A St. Johnsville woman is facing drug charges following a search warrant for illegal narcotics at 27 Monroe St. on March 11. Kayla A. Batten, 37, of 27, Monroe St., Apt. B, St. Johnsville was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and two counts of third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, both felonies. According to police, on March 11 at approximately 6 a.m., members of the St. Johnsville Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery County Regional SWAT team executed a search warrant for illegal narcotics at 27 Monroe St., Apt. B.
