TSSAA Board Of Control Meets, Works Through Large Agenda

The TSSAA Board of Control met on June 8 and 9, 2021 in Murfreesboro. The agenda was one of the largest in recent years with nearly 50 items for the Board to address.
The Board addressed a growing issue concerning virtual schools and athletic eligibility. The Board voted to permit the transfer of a student’s athletic record to a district-operated virtual school under the existing rules permitting transfers due to a student s reassignment by the school district.
As an emergency action for the upcoming school year, the Board voted to give virtual schools two options to choose from based on how it wishes to conduct its athletic programs. ....

Remote instruction served as dry run for Johnson City Virtual Academy

Plans to create a fully online academy in the Johnson City Schools system were in place even before the COVID-19 outbreak forced students and teachers to remote classrooms.
And if thereâs a bright side to the pandemic, said Superintendent Steve Barnett, itâs that it did allow the system to refine and troubleshoot its approach to remote learning before officially launching its online school.
More than 600 students have expressed interest in the Johnson City Virtual Academy, which will start in August. School officials have currently limited the online school to grades 5-12.
Barnett doesnât, however, expect enrollment for the virtual academy will be that large in the first year. He anticipates 200-300 students will ultimately meet the systemâs expectations for success in a virtual format. ....

Johnson City Virtual Academy application closes on April 30

The registration application for the Johnson City Virtual Academy will close at 3 p.m. Friday, April 30.
The Johnson City Virtual Academy will serve students in grades 5-12 and will be the only remote option for students in Johnson City Schools during the 2021-2022 school year.
The Tennessee State Board of Education passed a rule that no remote learning options will exist for students outside of an established virtual school for the 2021-22 school year.
All teachers will be employees of Johnson City Schools and fully licensed to serve in the grades and content areas where assigned. Remote learning opportunities will not be offered through any of the other eleven schools in Johnson City Schools during the 2021-22 school year. For the first year of operation, there will be a limited number of seats available in grades 5-8. ....

âA great deal of preparation has gone in to make sure that the JCVA program reflects the quality of instruction and learning that parents have come to expect in the other Johnson City Schools,â JCVA Principal George Laoo said.
