March 16, 1866: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported recent Washington County election results. S.T. Shipley was elected Sheriff. Maj. James E. Deacons was elected Circuit Court Clerk, while John F. Grisham was selected County Court Clerk. Capt. George McPherson was elected trustee, J.J. Yeager was elected revenue collector, and Lt. G.W. Douglas was elected register.
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time.
March 16, 1892: The Comet reported several items of interest to readers. “Dr. Bolton’s new residence is almost finished. It is very pretty.”
“Thomas B. Strain, E.T., V. & G. depot agent, has been indisposed for a few days.” ....

Feb. 15, 1867: Readers of The East Tennessee Union Flag were belatedly reminded about Valentine’s Day. “Yesterday was this worthy Saints Anniversary. The usual compliments were passed among the young people — and we might say the old ones, too.”
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way in 1867.
Feb. 15, 1899: The Chattanooga Daily Times, with a dateline of Johnson City, reported on a recent earthquake, as well as freezing temperatures. “A distinct earthquake shock was distinctly felt here yesterday about 4 o’clock, lasting fifteen or twenty seconds. It awoke several people from their slumbers. At first at (sic) was not recognized as an earthquake, as some thought, from the cracking noise, that it was only the effects of the freezing weather.” ....

Jan. 29, 1891: W.M. Christian advertised in The Comet for “a good load of hay or fodder.” However, no address or other contact information was provided to the reader.
Jan. 29, 1900: The Journal and Tribune, a newspaper in Knoxville and with a dateline of Johnson City, reported, “Capt. Ike T. Jobe, formerly of the United States volunteer infantry was captured at daylight at the residence of Chas. J. Faw, near Piney Flats, Sullivan county (sic), by a special government detective, and Deputy CW. McCall, of Knoxville. Jobe recently escaped from the Columbus, Ohio, jail, charged with using penalty envelopes from the war (sic) department (sic). Efforts to secure bail are being made.” ....

Jan. 7, 1862: According to “The Railroads of Johnson City” by Johnny Graybeal, Henry Johnson “sold his son John M., then age 22 a half-acre lot next to his depot building. The lot contained a house and was part of the original half-acre lot purchased in 1854. By this time, the phrase ‘Johnson’s Depot’ was in common usage by the Register of Deeds office to denote land in that area.”
Jan. 7, 1886: Readers of The Comet learned, “Mr. T.S. Patty, Emigrant Agent, of Portland, Oregon, was in the city last week. He is getting up an excursion to leave this place from the 1st to the 13th of May, for his State. He will work all through this section. Mr. Patty is a brother of our townsman, R.S. Patty.” ....

DECEMBER 24
Dec. 24, 1899: The St. Louis Globe-Democrat reported, “Daniel Strickland, an employee of the Iron Furnace Company, at this place, today, while working on top of the furnace, fell in and, descending 16 feet, struck a half-molten crust of red hot iron. He was about to sink to a terrible death when he jumped to a red hot bracket on one side . In the meantime a ladder was lowered from above. He grabbed it and was pulled to the top in an unconscious condition.” The article concluded in saying, “His hands are terribly burned, his left wrist twisted almost off and his body burned in several places. He will recover.” ....
