The city of Reno began cleaning up homeless camps along the Truckee River from the Kuenzli Street bridge to the Wells Avenue overpass on Thursday morning.
Dozens of empty tents, piles of old clothes, rusty metal, syringes and cigarette butts lined the sidewalk.
City employees had notified the people living there that the area will be closed for cleaning, according to city spokesman Jon Humbert. Most people had already left the area but a few were still at the camp, packing whatever belongings they could.
By 8:30 a.m., city employees began loading items into trash bags and carting away tents. A front-end loader demolished one of the sturdier structures, tearing down wooden walls and ripping the fabric roof to pieces.

The operation is scheduled to take place on Thursday from Kuenzli Street to the Wells Overpass, along Commercial Row.
The city of Reno has either given written or verbal notice that the area will be closed for cleaning, according to a statement from city spokesman Jon Humbert.
They sent out notices for Zone 3, an area from the Wells Overpass to Sutro Street, since Monday, according to the press release.
