COVID-19 pandemic top story of year
SIDNEY The year 2020 was a year unlike one that Shelby County residents had never experienced in their lifetime. The year had individual events which changed lives but non like the coronavirus pandemic which started in March and continues to today.
The editorial staff selected what they felt were the top stories of 2020.
COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic dominated the news cycle and affected lives more than few, if any, events ever have.
The Sidney-Shelby County Health Department has reported more than 3,000 cases of COVID-19 in the county. More than 100 residents have been hospitalized because of the virus, and there have been 18 confirmed deaths. At times Shelby County had one of the state’s highest incidence rates.

SIDNEY == As 2020 comes to a close, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart is bidding a fond farewell the his fellow employees at the sheriff;s office. Lenhart, who didn’t seek re-election to the office, will begin a new career after the first of the year with the Ohio State Auditor’ Office.
During his final interview for his weekly column, Lenhart reflected on his years as sheriff.
“ I’m going to miss the people,” said Lenhart of his coworkers. “Ill miss the interaction with the people.
“Some of these folks I hired the first time I was sheriff. I hired the moms and dads and now I’ve hired the children I’ve watched grow up,” he said.

And the 2020 Christmas celebration will be different than those of yesteryear.
No matter how you’re celebrating Christmas and New Year’s, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart says it should be safety first for both holidays.
“You might have to deal with holiday weather,” said Lenhart, of those families who are traveling. “There were 278 fatal crashes last year across the United States. Ohio had 10 fatalities last year.
“If you’re traveling to visit your extended family, here’s some tips on how to get there safely,” said Lenhart.
