East-West Trail Lake Quinsigamond Cascades Park 14-mile cross-city hike

WORCESTER  After three years, 1,250 volunteer hours, 22 directional signs and kiosks, 23 mileage marker posts and two murals, the East-West Trail is taking a new direction.
The East-West Trail is a 14-mile cross-city hike, stretching from Lake Quinsigamond to Cascades Park. The trail, while winding through timeless nature and numerous historical spots in the city, is a fairly new project, born in 2015 as a patchwork of green spaces and city streets.
The trail project was spearheaded by Worcester-based nonprofit Park Spirit, a volunteer-run group established in 1988 by Colin Novick of the Greater Worcester Land Trust and Rick Miller, former Park Spirit president. ....

NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Clark University professor working to quantify the amount of solar development in Rhode Island found that 740 acres have been developed for solar power, nearly half of it on previously forested land.
John Rogan is a geography professor in the Worcester university’s Graduate School of Geography. His previous work includes mapping elephants in Africa and mining installations in Peru. ....

Clark University solar power Massachusetts Audubon Society Rhode Island deforestation

WORCESTER – A research team at Clark University has helped reveal what local environmentalists say is a troubling side effect of the proliferation of solar energy in the region in recent years.
Groups like the Massachusetts Audubon Society had suspected attractive financial incentives to install solar fields coupled with the abundance of rural land had contributed to widespread deforestation in Massachusetts and surrounding states. But it wasn’t until Clark geography professor John Rogan and his student researchers mapped out that impact that the full extent of the problem emerged.
According to Rogan, through a combination of using satellite imagery, machine-learning algorithms, and other free resources, his team found that in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, nearly 4,000 acres of private forest land have been cleared to make way for solar arrays. ....

WORCESTER, Mass. - Clark University recently completed a study on the impact the number of ever-increasing solar panel farms is having on the environments of Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Led by Graduate School of Geography professor John Rogan, Clark students found a staggering amount of valuable forest habitat and agricultural land being lost to the development of solar farms.
The school conducted the research after being approached by the Mass Audubon Society to look at impacts the solar farms were having in rural areas.
Research found that the land taken in Massachusetts by solar farm development is equal to that of one-third the city of Worcester s land area. The students found ....
