John Konrads, one of Australia’s greatest swimmers during a golden age for the sport, has died.

SYDNEY (AP) John Konrads, who set 26 individual freestyle swimming world records and won an Olympic gold medal in 1960, has died, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame announced Monday. He was 78.
Konrads was born in Latvia in 1942 and moved to Australia with his parents, his two sisters and a grandmother in 1949.
“As a swimming sensation in the 1950’s and 60’s, John Konrads dominated the world swimming scene, breaking every freestyle world record between 200 meters and 1,500 meters by the time he was 15,” Sport Australia Hall of Fame chairman John Bertrand said in a statement. “His career tally of 26 individual world records is an incredible record.” ....

Australian swimming legend John Konrads has died in Brisbane at the age of 78.
His brilliant, but relatively brief career saw him set 26 individual freestyle world records, at distances ranging from 200m to 1500m, and he won the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
At the age of 15, Konrads set an incredible six world records in eight days at the 1958 national championships, and he went on to win two individual and one relay gold medal at that year s British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Wales.
Born in Latvia, Konrads and his family emigrated to Australia in 1949, initially being placed in a migrant camp in Maitland, in New South Wales. ....

MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australian swimming was in mourning on Monday after the death of Olympic gold medallist John Konrads at the age of 78.
Latvia-born Konrads, who learned to swim at a migrants camp in rural New South Wales state, won the 1,500m freestyle gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics and set a raft of world records as a teenager in the late 1950s.
Along with sister Ilsa, who won a freestyle relay silver at Rome, the two were known as the “Konrads Kids”.
“As a swimming sensation in the 1950’s and 60’s, John Konrads dominated the world swimming scene, breaking every freestyle world record between 200m – 1,500m by the time he was 15,” Sport Australia Hall of Fame chairman John Bertrand said in a statement. ....
