In the waning days of the 19th century, Kentucky’s gubernatorial race between Republican William Taylor of Butler County and Democrat William Goebel of Covington was unbelievably bitter. Taylor was the current Attorney General of Kentucky, elected in 1895 along with the Commonwealth’s first Republican governor, William Bradley. Goebel made his foray into politics with a successful bid for state senate in 1887, and immediately made a name for himself by taking aim at the powerful L&N Railroad. During his senate career, Goebel defeated efforts to abolish Kentucky’s Railroad Commission, drastically increased the tax valuation on the property owned by the L&N and exposed unethical tactics used b ....
