Tom Bowerman . . . Coach of the Alamo Warriors By Butch Dale Tom Bowerman • • One of the most respected coaches in Montgomery County basketball history was Tom Bowerman, who coached at Alamo and Waynetown a total of 27 years. Tom was born in Alamo in 1913 and spent all of his life in Ripley Township. As a junior and senior he played basketball for Alamo High School, which had no gym at that time, forcing the team to practice and play all of their home games at Wallace. After graduating in 1932, Tom headed to Wabash College where he earned a Bachelor s degree in education, and subsequently returned to his hometown to teach social studies and coach. There he remained for the next 22 years. ....
Butch remembers a rock, a bird and a second chance By Butch Dale • • I guess most of you know by now that I was somewhat mischievous as a youngster growing up on the farm. I was a very stubborn boy and often did not listen to my parents. Let s just say I was an independent thinker. I had to learn the hard way. And you might also recall that I loved the game of baseball. I was a pitcher. In fact, during all of those years that I played the sport, I pitched for my team in just about every game. And at home, I practiced my pitching . . . not just throwing a baseball, but also anything I might pick up . . . trying to hit objects at a distance . . . which leads me to this story . . . ....

Haffner showing off his trophy for being the â1956 Outstanding Seniorâ • • • Whenever I hear the Haffner name, I automatically think of the outstanding New Ross teams of the late 1950s and early 1960s. There were three Haffner boys . . . Dick, who graduated in 1956, Phil in 1961, and Ron in 1966 . . . all of them great athletes. The oldest boy, Dick, started every game at center from his freshman year on. During his four years of playing, with Glen Harper as coach, the Blue Jays compiled a regular season record of 65-16, winning their first Sectional Tourney in 1954 when Dick was a sophomore, and then winning both the County and Sectional in 1956 when he was a senior.his team go ....
