Three LCPS teachers finalist for district Teacher of the Year By Patrick Holmes Lenoir County Public Schools Three young women who put their hearts into teaching Lenoir County Public Schools’ youngest students have surfaced as finalists for the district honor of 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year. Selection of Shalona Newkirk of Northwest Elementary School, Heather Sloan of Banks Elementary School and Darylanne Towery of Contentnea-Savannah K-8 School was announced Wednesday afternoon after a panel of judges had completed virtual interviews with 18 nominees – each school’s choice as Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022. “Let me say you are all winners,” district human resources director Pam Health, who directs the Teacher of the Year program, told nominees gathered virtually for the announcement of finalists. “It was so hard to narrow down. There are only three slots and every one of you deserves one of those three slots. You made us so proud.” ....

Councils secure £2.9m emergency tree fund The Woodland Trust has awarded 11 local authorities £2.9m to plant trees and create green spaces. The charity launched its new Emergency Tree Fund as part of a commitment to establish 50 million more trees by 2025. It warned that while many councils having ambitious tree planting targets, the financial impact of the pandemic has halted this work. The money will be used to plant trees and create woodland to help with people’s health and wellbeing, soak up harmful carbon, combat pollution and create detailed tree strategies. John Tucker, the Woodland Trust’s director of woodland outreach, said: Our overall goal is to be the architect of inspiring local authorities across the UK to help their residents become tree champions - and make trees a key part of their policies. ....
Cornwall Council are to receive just short of £300k in order to help plant trees in and around communities across the south west. As part of the Woodland Trust charity’s Emergency Tree Fund, Cornwall Council are set to receive £293,965 which aims to make up for a current lack of investment to help cash strapped local authorities break through barriers to get more trees and woods in the ground. The Woodland Trust s Emergency Tree Fund s objectives include giving more local communities green spaces on their doorsteps which have shown to be so important for people during the current pandemic. In 2019, Cornwall Council declared a Climate Emergency and set out its ambition to become Carbon Neutral by 2030. ....
