Biography reveals untold history of wealthy same-sex couple who lived as father and son

Mon, 05/03/2021
LAWRENCE Once described as “the richest bachelor in Chicago,” Robert Allerton was a gay man who in 1922 began a romance with a student 26 years his junior named John Gregg. To hide this risky relationship, they began referring to each other as father and son.
In 1960, after nearly four decades together, Allerton legally adopted Gregg.
“They are fascinating because of being so anomalous. It’s not like most people did this,” said Nick Syrett, a professor of women, gender & sexuality studies at the University of Kansas.
“But I like the idea that they complicate our history of what queer couplehood looks like in the past. And they complicate the history of what any kind of couple looks like even today.” ....

First published April 23, 2021 in TheStatehouseFile.com
Current and former state legislators and a former Indiana Supreme Court justice are raising concerns that a bill to extend rather than adjourn the 2021 session blurs the separation of powers and could have “dangerous” implications for the future.

Now some worry the unusual move could set a precedent for a full-time legislature, and others wonder about lawmakers fundraising while technically still in session, which is typically not allowed. ....

We are now in the “Super Majority Era” of Indiana governance. While there have been 20 Democratic House and Senate super majorities, and 49 for Republicans over the past two centuries, never have these decks been stacked like they are today with both chambers so Republican that they can do business without a single Democrat present.
According to former speakers Brian Bosma and John Gregg, current Speaker Todd Huston and Senate President Pro Tempore Rod Bray are working with caucuses that are too big, with the bipartisan filters removed.
As the General Assembly heads toward an April 21 sine die, Huston and Bray are attempting to shepherd their super majority caucuses (39 in the Senate, 71 in the House) on an array of issues that could alter the state’s future pandemic responses, how it deals with municipalities and manages its natural resources ....
