Did you ever hear of the story of John Currier? Currier was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in prison in 1949. He was moved later and sent to work close to Nashville, Tennessee on a farm. In 1968 Currier’s sentence was commuted and a letter was sent to him bearing the great news. Unfortunately, John never saw the letter and no one contacted him or told him about it. John continued to work as hard as he did before on that farm with no hope. Through all the years that he was incarcerated John continued doing exactly what he was told and worked hard each day. ....

Native was distinguished flyer
The name of the late U.S. Coast Guard Vice Admiral John Currier, a Westbrook native, is inscribed on a statue at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C., his father said Saturday during a visit to the Westbrook Historical Society.
Bill Currier said his son, who died a year ago at age 68 in Michigan, was recognized as a recipient of the Harmon International Trophy in 1980.
As a Coast Guard helicopter pilot and then a lieutenant junior grade, John Currier flew a night mission that rescued 10 crew members from a fishing vessel on fire in heavy seas and high winds off New Bedford, Massachusetts, his father said. ....

International affairs forum to pay tribute to former Coast Guard vice admiral

Each were the recipients of the Harmon Trophy, a set of international awards to recognize the world s most outstanding aviators.
Currier, the 28th Vice Commandant of the 
U.S. Coast Guard, was awarded the trophy in 1988 for piloting a hazardous rescue operation to save 10 people off the coast of 
Cape Cod.
