Latrobe may hire a consultant to recommend ways the city fire department can increase revenue while cutting costs. Council at its June 14 meeting is expected to consider a study proposal for the department from Fast Attack, a consulting firm headed by Mt. Lebanon Fire Chief Nicholas Sohyda. The firm was recommended by the office of city Solicitor John Greiner and would charge $75 per hour, up to a maximum of $6,000, for its services, according to city manager Michael Gray. ....

Residents’ complaints about recreational vehicles and trailers hogging on-street parking spaces prompted Latrobe Council to look at amending its parking regulations to prohibit the practice. At its May 10 meeting, council is expected to consider an ordinance change that would keep such vehicles from taking up street parking except for limited times in particular circumstances. City Manager Michael Gray proposed prohibiting parking of RVs, boats and unattached trailers on city streets except in specific situations. He said homeowners would be allowed to park RVs on the street in front of their property for up to 72 hours, for loading and unloading purposes, or for winterizing the vehicle or preparing it for a trip, if they provide advance notice to the city. ....

John Greiner Special to The Oklahoman An Oklahoma man who saved many of his fellow soldiers during a Vietnamese ambush 53 years ago is among four veterans whose heroism is being considered for an upgrade to the Medal of Honor. The National Defense Authorization Act of 2021, passed when Congress overrode the veto by former President Donald Trump, waives the five-year period between acts of valor and approval of the Medal of Honor for the four veterans. The legislation was written by Sen. James Inhofe, R-Tulsa. Birdwell, a native of Adair County, lives in Norman and practices law in Oklahoma City. He was awarded two Silver Star Medals for his valor in Vietnam. One of the Silver Stars could now be upgraded to Medal of Honor because of the National Defense Authorization Act. To date, Birdwell has not heard anything further about the Medal of Honor. ....
