Old Summit House torn down I don’t understand why the city tore down the old Summit House on the top of Pikes Peak before the new one was open. The Cog Railway will begin taking passengers to the summit this month, and no Summit House will be available. The last I heard the summit will also begin allowing toll road drivers to visit the summit by Memorial Day. One never knows what kind of weather they will find at 14,115 feet. No shelter, no real bathrooms, no gifts, no food, or hot coffee will be available. In my eyes, this treats our visitors with contempt. ....
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers? We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions. What should we do with our second vote in 2021? What happens if Westminster says no to indyref2? Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversation, register under fake names, and post vile abuse. In third place for the Lib Dems, serving Highland councillor Denis Rixson took 6,778, while Labour’s John Erskine languished with 3,855. Ms Forbes, not long turned 31, could barely take in the size of her majority, more than 15,000 as she left the declaration hall, describing herself as surprised and taken aback to see an increase of that magnitude. ....

The essays were a lot of fun; they were also implicitly nostalgic for the novelistic world that Roth so egomaniacally bestrode. At Toni Morrison’s death in 2019 I suggested in the New York Times that she might be the last “Great American Novelist”, meaning not the last good novelist (good novels are still regularly published) but the last writer who “made novels seem essential to an educated person’s understanding of her country”. That might be premature – Cormac McCarthy is still living, after all – but in the sheer energy and delight of the Roth reviews you ....
