Tuesday, July 27, 2021 Tuesday’s Hays County Commissioners Court meeting saw much discussion around the proposed multi-year Improvement Grant Program application to the Texas Indigent Defense Commission (TIDC) for public defender services. “The TIDC grant application that the county submitted requires judicial support to get funding from TIDC,” Commissioner Lon Shell said. Shell spoke of the significance of implementing a mental health court into the Hays County justice system. “During the development of the grant application that we submitted and supported, this court and many of our stakeholders agreed that mental health was a prime concern,” Shell said. Shell explained that while this is just one issue to tackle, it can help make strides of improvement throughout the justice system. ....

The second String Quartet of distinguished African-American composer Florence Price illuminates and inspires after a century of neglect. Francis Poulenc’s sole Violin Sonata, written in memory of poet Federico García Lorca, burns with lyricism and virtuosity in the hands of concertmaster Jesse Holstein. In homage to the centenary of his passing, our program closes with the effulgent Piano Quartet Op. 41 of Camille St. Saens. Along with SCCMS Artistic Director Janice Weber, the NBSO principal musicians performing in this concert are Jesse Holstein, violin; EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks, violin; Anna Griffis, viola; and Leo Eguchi, cello. ....

That s what students at the G-Star School of the Arts are saying as they take the stage virtually to perform William Shakespeare s classic play The Taming of The Shrew. Elizabeth D Amico, a tenth grader at the school, is one of 12 cast members in the play. It s a very different experience, trying to learn how to set up at home and learning how to act to a camera because I never do that. I’m always used to being on stage, D Amico said. ....
