Drowned in Sound's 16 Favourite Albums of 2016 / In Depth // Drowned In Sound

December 14th, 2016
This year, to save you from an overwhelming wall of names, we’ve refined our list. With just 16 albums this year, we hope you will find at least one album to fall in love with that you missed, plus a few more to nod in agreement on seeing their inclusion.
All of these records could have been number one. The positioning is a little bit arbitrary, as if there’s some sort of definitive order and none of this is utterly subjective. Part of this Does it really make any difference if it’s number 32 or 53 if it isn’t number one? -ness was behind our decision to change things up a bit this year. However, we have also shared all of our teams’ top 3s in one handy article, which should hopefully satiate those of you looking for further recommendations and assurances that we didn’t totally forget [insert name of your album of the year]. These lists weren’t totted up, but were more of an advisement to create a representation of what ‘we’, the team ....

Editorial
As we go to press on 8 December, it seems to hang in the balance whether the Tories will conclude a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU. The Tory leadership is cultivating an image of being not too bothered either way. We will have either “No Deal” (which means a lot of short-term disruption, followed by a scramble to get some sketchy deal in the next years) or a bodged Brexit deal. The bodged last-minute Tory deal will leave many issues to be resolved, but will include the closing of borders to free movement from Europe and probably license systematic reduction over time of social provision. ....

Fishing row is just latest mad gambit from UK – but Boris's ship may well be sinking

It has become increasingly clear from chief EU negotiator Michel Barnier and EC President Ursula von der Leyen that they no longer feel the UK is acting in anything other than bad faith. You can’t blame them, either.
For instance, the proposed UK Internal Markets Bill, which was reluctantly withdrawn last week, would have seen Mr Johnson’s government openly breach established international law; and when you have a government which is prepared to rattle a sabre that big, it’s always going to be hard to trust them. But they have now started to rattle an even larger sabre and it is a perfect illustration of how ....

Scandal of underpaid care home workers predates coronavirus

Letters
Private care homes capitalise on the outdated expectation that people in the care sector, most of whom are women, should be labouring purely out of love
THE revelation of the 2000 Covid deaths in private care homes has been labelled a crisis by some. But the crisis has been going on for a lot longer. Abuse, abandonment, neglect and unnecessary death are the shameful consequence of entrusting the dignity of thousands of vulnerable lives to the hands of profit.
The scandalous pay care workers receive is just the icing on this tiered cake of death and pound notes. The sexism of expecting those in a field dominated by female workers to not only accept but expect less than a living wage reeks with the audacity of a 1950s husband eyeing up his secretary. ....
