This Day in Yankees History: Wally Pipp joins New York Share this story Welcome to the relaunched This Day in Yankees History. We may be well into hot stove season, but there’s still some time to dig into the history books. These daily posts will highlight two or three key moments in Yankees history on a given date, as well as recognize players born on the day. Hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane with us! ★ ★ ★ 106 years ago The Detroit Tigers waive Wally Pipp to the New York Yankees. Pipp hit .161 in 12 games, but he’d eventually anchor first base in New York for a decade until Lou Gehrig’s appearance. Pipp played for New York for 11 seasons from 1915-1925 and hit .282/.343/.414 during that decade-plus. share-square-1078803 Over their 138-season history, the Giants have seen scores of talented players become synonymous with the numbers on the backs of their jerseys. His signature moment came in 1987, when he crushed four homers against the Cardinals in the National League Championship Series and took home Series MVP honors despite the Giants losing in seven games. ....

But it’s beyond safe to say that the Dodgers got exactly what they wanted and then some by acquiring Mookie Betts from the Red Sox. “When we acquired him, my expectations were sky high, and somehow he managed to find headroom above that, and exceed it,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said after the World Series. “I just can’t say enough about the baseball player, the way he makes everyone around him better. It’s hard to imagine us sitting here right now without him.” ....
KINGSPORT â Ten Dobyns-Bennett High School students in the schoolâs Transition School to Work or TSW program each got a bicycle on Wednesday, thanks to a ongoing bike program at the East Tennessee State University Valleybrook campus. Undergraduate Coordinator of Public Health and Director of Operations for Project EARTH Mike Stoots mid-day Wednesday continued an ongoing program of donating bikes otherwise destined for metal recycling to new owners. Most are donated by OmniSource in Johnson City, a metal recycling business. Each student got to choose a bike of his or her liking and most gave them a spin in a parking lot adjacent to the Valleybrook building, off the Eastern Star Road Exit of Interstate 26. ....
