HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Lakeylah White clinched the Democratic nomination for Hattiesburg mayor during a Tuesday runoff and will face the incumbent in the general election.
White received 778 votes, or 51%, to defeat Vanessa Jones, who received 742 votes. Seven affidavit ballots remain to be counted.
White said she is excited to continue her campaign.
“I want to say come on let’s make history, let’s turn Hattiesburg blue,” White said. “Let’s get the first female mayor in Hattiesburg, and I’m so excited to meet the people out here in Hattiesburg and talk to people every day.”

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Vanessa Jones and Lakeylah White will face off for the Democratic nomination for Hattiesburg mayor next Tuesday in a runoff.
Jones, a long-time fixture in Hattiesburg legal circles, received the most votes in the primary, pulling 910 of the 2,081 votes cast, for 43.7%. White was close behind.
White, who led the city’s department of urban development during the final term of former mayor Johnny DuPree, picked up 870 votes, or 41.8% of the votes.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Two Democrat incumbent City of Hattiesburg council members were reelected to four-year terms, while the Democratic nominee for mayor won’t be decided until April 27.
Vanessa Jones and Lakeylah White will face off in a runoff in three weeks for the opportunity to challenge incumbent Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker in June’s general election.
Jones and White were the top two vote getters in a three-person race in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
