JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A judge who presided over the murder case of the man who assassinated civil rights icon Medgar Evers has died.
Tuesday, the Mississippi Administrative Office of Courts confirmed that former Hinds County Circuit Judge Breland Hilburn had passed away.
Hilburn, who was at one time the senior circuit judge for Hinds County, sentenced Byron De La Beckwith to life in prison following his conviction in Beckwith’s 1994 murder trial.

TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal is hiring a new executive editor who previously led another newspaper in the state.
Sam R. Hall begins work Feb. 8 at the Daily Journal, according to announcement Monday from William Bronson, publisher of the Tupelo-based paper. Hall is a Tupelo native and 1994 graduate of Tupelo High School.
Hall succeeds Elizabeth Walters, who left the Daily Journal in January after two years as executive editor. She returned to South Carolina to work as audience development editor for The Greenville News, Anderson Independent Mail and Spartanburg Herald-Journal.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - A federal judge signed a consent decree Wednesday between the city of Hattiesburg and state and federal agencies over a longstanding issue with the city’s wastewater system.
The consent decree and the accompanying lawsuit, filed by the Environmental Protection Agency, were announced by Mayor Toby Barker on Aug. 26 after seven years of negotiations.
Negotiations began during former Mayor Johnny DuPree’s administration after a September 2012 EPA inspection noted unreported sanitary sewer overflows.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Members of the Hattiesburg Police Department command staff and Mayor Toby Barker gathered Wednesday to congratulate and thank Chief Anthony Parker ahead of his retirement.
The city announced in late November that Parker will retire at the end of the year after decades in law enforcement and five years as the city’s police chief.
Assistant Chief Peggy Sealy, who will take over chief duties during the department’s transition, opened by thanking Parker for his 40 years of dedication to law enforcement in Mississippi and his leadership of the Hattiesburg Police Department.
