The design can sense restenosis when used in a stent, and the same design can. view more Credit: iSMaRT Lab From the biggest bridges to the smallest medical implants, sensors are everywhere, and for good reason: The ability to sense and monitor changes before they become problems can be both cost-saving and life-saving. To better address these potential threats, the Intelligent Structural Monitoring and Response Testing (iSMaRT) Lab at the University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering has designed a new class of materials that are both sensing mediums and nanogenerators, and are poised to revolutionize the multifunctional material technology big and small. ....
Researchers in China have developed a backpack that turns the energy of walking into electricity. Backpacks that can generate energy have been made before, but previously they have been relatively inefficient - meaning the power output was low. This new prototype generates enough electricity from walking to power an electric watch. It has “promising potential to be a power source for small-scale wearable and portable electronics, GPS systems, and other self-powered health care sensors,” according Zhong Lin Wang, Jia Cheng and their colleagues wanted to create something that also made it easier to carry a heavy bag. Alongside generating energy to power a torch or even your smartwatch on a long hike, the prototype also makes whatever you are carrying feel around 20 per cent lighter. ....

But now, researchers have developed a prototype that not only makes loads feel about 20% lighter, but also harvests energy from human movements to power small electronics. The new backpack, reported in ACS Nano, could be especially useful for athletes, explorers and disaster rescuers who work in remote areas without electricity, the researchers say. Backpacks are widely used in everyday life for the hands-free carrying of loads. Over time, however, walking or running with a heavy sack can cause back and neck pain. Also, backpackers in wilderness areas (or even those in cities who don t have ready access to a charger) might wish for a bag that could harvest the mechanical ener ....
In addition to charging small electronic devices, the backpack is also a breeze to wear compared to other backpacks. A prototype backpack gathers energy from walking and uses it to power small electronics, while making loads feel lighter. (Photo via Courthouse News courtesy of ACS Nano 2021) (CN) Backpacks are the lifeblood of city commuters, a hiking necessity and a middle school rite of passage. With new energy-harvesting technology, the packs could become more than a vessel for your stuff: They can also use your body’s energy and to charge electronics. An international team of researchers say they have developed a prototype for a backpack that both lightens the load for people trekking long distances, and converts energy from walking into power for small wearable and portable electronics, like GPS systems. ....
