Polk County superintendent search: Panel makes top 7 picks


LAKELAND  The Polk County Public Schools citizens advisory committee on Thursday evening whittled 52 candidates who applied for school superintendent to their top seven. 
“This is one of the largest fields we’ve had,” said Florida School Boards Association consultant Bill Vogel.  
Current Schools Superintendent Jacqueline Byrd announced in May that she would retire from one of the largest districts in the nation, with more than 107,000 students last year and 150 schools.  
The School Board then set about to start the process of hiring an expert to help them with selecting the new Polk Schools leader. FSBA, which, among other things, assists districts statewide in finding the right candidate, won the contract for about $35,000.  ....

Blake Academy's Maude Graham named 2021 Teacher of the Year


LAKELAND  By the time Maude Graham was just 9 years old, she had lost both of her parents and struggled to read. She decided to go into teaching to help students who were like her in school. 
“I learned that teachers were progressing me because I was young and fragile, wide-eyed, eager to learn and very obedient,” Graham told Polk County Public School officials. “Knowing this, I always wanted to become the teacher who taught students who struggled as I had. I always dreamt of teaching students reading strategies, no matter the circumstances that stood in their way.” 
Now 40 years old, Graham was named the Polk County Public Schools 2021 Teacher of the Year on Thursday night at a scaled-back ceremony at the RP Funding Center.  ....

28-Year-Old Florida Mother Tragically Dies in ATV Accident That Injures 2 Others

A public fundraiser  started by Walker’s family on Facebook has so far raised more than $11,000 for her husband Kenny and two young sons, 
A 28-year-old Florida teacher described as a loving mother and wife was killed when the ATV she was driving struck a road embankment and rolled over, according to a report. 
Megan Walker died from the injuries she sustained from the fatal accident that occurred on a wooded dirt trail on Blountstown Highway, near Lake Talquin, in Tallahassee, Florida, shortly after 11 p.m. on Jan. 9. According to police, Walker s ATV side-by-side rolled over after striking a road embankment. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene, and the ATV’s two other occupants, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, were transported to an area hospital for medical treatment. Polk schools have 19 applicants so far for superintendent


The district continues to receive applications, with a Jan. 31 deadline at midnight for the final applications to be submitted.  
Superintendent Jacqueline Byrd announced her retirement in May. Her successor is scheduled to be selected at the April 27 board meeting. 
The applicants so far are: 

Wayne Alexander, Ed.D.  Serves as a school principal (PK-8) in “the largest multi-cultural school in Connecticut.” He is also the former Hernando County schools superintendent, serving between 2007 and 2009. He has served as a teacher and administrator for 34 years.  

Adam Lane  The Haines City High School and Haines City International Baccalaureate principal, a position he has held for the last six years. He also helped develop and implement an IB program at Largo High School, which aided in the  consecutive D school” to move to an A grade within two years. At HCHS, he has lowered all discipline referrals by 31%, w ....

COVID vaccines: Polk County Public Schools trying to get older employees in line


LAKELAND  Polk County Public Schools are in negotiations with the Florida Department of Health’s Polk County office to put school district employees who are 65 or older near the front of the vaccination line. 
“We did have some brief conversations about rolling out shots,” Deputy Superintendent John Hill said at Tuesday s School Board workshop in response to a question from School Board member Sarah Fortney. Hill said that he and Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Teddra Porteous were planning to reach out to Polk County s Department of Health Director Dr. Joy Jackson to negotiate a shot schedule for district employees.  ....
