AMA Delegates Tussle Over Lowering Medicare Eligibility Age to 60

Expanding Medicare to include people ages 60 to 64 remains a divisive issue among members of the American Medical Association House of Delegates.

Health care in rural America has become ever more scarce during the coronavirus pandemic, with folks finding it increasingly difficult to find a doctor or get to a hospital.
For a decade, rural areas have been losing hospitals to financial problems, forcing residents to either drive long distances or shrug their shoulders and forgo needed care.

Doctor group advises shorter antibiotic course for common infections

The American College of Physicians (ACP) has released new guidelines recommending a short course of antibiotics for four common bacterial infections.
Annals of Internal Medicine, addresses antibiotic therapy for four of the most common bacterial infections seen in inpatient and outpatient settings: community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), acute bronchitis with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), urinary tract infection (UTI), and cellulitis. The recommendations are based on published clinical guidelines and peer-reviewed literature, including randomized clinical trials that have compared shorter antibiotic courses to longer ones.
ACP President Jacqueline Fincher, MD, MACP, says the new guidance reflects several years worth of data that suggest that shorter antibiotic courses for these infections are just as effective as longer courses, and the growing recognition that overly long prescriptions are among the factors driving unnecessary antibi ....

Doctors' Group: Antibiotics Can Be Taken for Shorter Periods

TUESDAY, April 6, 2021 (HealthDay News) Millions of Americans have at some point in their lives gotten a long course of antibiotics to treat a bacterial infection. But according to new recommendations from a major U.S. doctors group, some of the most common bacterial infections can now be treated with shorter courses of the drugs.
The advice, from the American College of Physicians (ACP), says that for several types of infections, shorter courses of antibiotics do the job and even do it more safely.
The conditions include straightforward cases of pneumonia, skin infection and urinary tract infection (UTI), meaning they are not complicated by other medical conditions. ....
