One in Two Playwright Donja R. Love Wins Terrence McNally Award for New Play About AIDS in the '80s

Playwright Donja R. Love is the first winner of the newly revived Terrence McNally Award, given by Philadelphia Theatre Company (PTC) to a local playwright whose work grapples with with queer identity, social justice, and the transformative power of art just as many of the plays written by McNally do.

What Will Happen to All That Beauty?, which revisits the horror of AIDS in the 1980s. Donja Love wrote an unflinching, sprawling epic featuring intricately detailed characters that are so hungry, you find yourself trying to breathe for them, said PTC producing artistic director Paige Price. ....

The 2021 Yale Drama Series Prize, one of the theater world’s most prestigious awards for playwrights, has been awarded to Rachel Lynett for her play “Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You Too August Wilson).” The award recipient was chosen by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel.

“Apologies to Lorraine Hansberry (You Too August Wilson)” is set in the fictional world of a post-second Civil War. Bronx Bay, an all-Black state (and neighborhood) is established in order to protect “Blackness.” As Jules’ new partner, Yael, moves into town, community members argue whether Yael, who is Dominican, can stay. Questions of safety and protection surround both Jules and Yael as the utopia of Bronx Bay confronts where the line is when it comes to defining who is Black and who gets left out ....

The Watchung Arts Center will host a “Big Easy Mardi Gras” virtual celebration on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.
The Mardi Gras Band will return after last year’s sellout performance with band leader and bassist Thaddeus Exposé, vocalist Arlee Leonard, pianist Brandon McCune, drummer Gordon Lane, trumpeter Michael Green and clarinetist Marty Eigen
