Senate confirms Biden s DHS pick after GOP delay
The Senate on Tuesday voted to confirm Alejandro Mayorkas after a Republican effort stalled confirmation of President Biden s pick to lead the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Mayorkas was one of the first of President Biden s Cabinet nominees to gather significant pushback from Senate Republicans.
He was confirmed by a 56-43 vote.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) lead an effort to have Mayorkas go through a second confirmation hearing before the Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) putting a hold on him after he appeared before the Homeland Security Committee. ....

A bipartisan bill creating an ambassador-at-large position to combat anti-Semitism was signed into law by President Donald Trump on Wednesday.
The Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act, introduced in the House by Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., elevates the special envoy position and provides more clout and resources to the office in charge of leading the U.S. response to fighting anti-Semitism worldwide. ....

WASHINGTON, D.C. Building on an amendment he wrote in 2004 to create a Special Envoy to combat anti-Semitism, this week Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) successfully pushed enactment of his S
pecial Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism Act that expands the authority of the office and elevates the Envoy to that of Ambassador-at-Large, granting the position added clout to fight the rise in worldwide anti-Semitism.
“My new law will raise the Special Envoy to the rank of Ambassador-at-large, a high-level position that will allow the Special Envoy to report directly to the Secretary of State,” ....
