As coronavirus conditions worsen, the Austin school board voted Wednesday to give the superintendent the authority to shutter schools for in-person learning after the winter break. The vote sets the stage for a return to 100% remote learning when schools re-start in early January, and comes as Austin health officials, wary of a growing surge in coronavirus cases ahead of Christmas and New Year’s Day, recommended that the community be placed under the tightest pandemic restrictions so far this year.
