It was a weekend filled with laughs, wonder and intrigue
at Baycourt Community and Arts Centre, with over 800 people
gathering to watch Indian Ink’s powerful play ‘Paradise
or the Impermanence Ice Cream’.
As audiences settled
into their seats and hushed darkness took over the theatre,
Kutisar (Jacob Rajan) is lit up on stage as he wakes in
purgatory. Baffled by his surroundings, he is soon
confronted by a vulture looking for its next meal, and is
transported back to his 20s to learn why he is stuck in
limbo.
From a Mumbai disco he meets Meera, a Parsi who ....

Ice Cream, vultures and Bollywood disco combine in new production starring acclaimed actor


Selling out its two-week preview season in 2020,
Paradise is touted as a showcase for Rajan’s talents, with a solo performance channelling seven characters. As with other Indian Ink productions, audiences can expect exquisite puppetry, the use of masks, inspired sound design, and comic originality.
Rajan has cemented himself as one of New Zealand’s finest thespians. He was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit in 2013 for his services to theatre, and in 2002 he received the prestigious Arts Foundation Laureate.
He won the prestigious Fringe First Award in Edinburgh with Indian Ink’s first play
Krishnan’s Dairy back in 1997, and has since charmed audiences the world over with the one-man play – a feat he aims to repeat when he shortly takes ....

Actor Jacob Rajan's new show weaves together Bollywood and vultures


“It’s a word that resonates with the strange times we’re living in,” he said.
The play itself follows a man desperately trying to avoid death being flung between limbo and his past, where a rebellious young woman from Mumbai’s Parsi community – a people whose faith is entwined with the vulture – holds the key that may deliver him to paradise.
