UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. A newly founded, interdisciplinary research center established to further foundational and applied artificial intelligence (AI) in engineered systems will bring together expertise from 75 researchers representing 24 academic units across Penn State.

March’s deadly fire in Rockland is shining a spotlight on major code enforcement issues in Ramapo and Spring Valley.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is among those under scrutiny surrounding the bloc vote and building code enforcement in Rockland.
“When the investigations are complete, they are going to show a level of dysfunction in Spring Valley when it comes to enforcement of building and fire codes, says former Rockland County Fire Commissioner Gordon Wren.
Wren says the fires at Motty’s Supermarket in Monsey and Evergreen Court for Adults in Spring Valley are the worst-case scenario. He says that he and others have repeatedly warned state and local officials about for years. ....

Penn State partners to launch NSF's Engineering Research Visioning Alliance

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Engineering today (April 7) launched the Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA), the first engineering research-visioning organization of its kind. Penn State helped convene the alliance as a founding partner in collaboration with the University’s Big Ten peers to advance high-impact engineering research, according to Lora Weiss, Penn State’s senior vice president for research.
“The ERVA mission is to identify and develop bold and transformative engineering research, and Penn State does this exceptionally well,” Weiss said. “Working with our Big Ten partners and the extended team, we are well positioned to pioneer new developments, anticipate the hardest challenges, create new knowledge and field impressive prototypes. We enthusiastically support ERVA and look forward to collaborating with our partners on these engineering endeavors.” ....

Marilyn Schwartz died in hospice care Feb. 25 in Houston. She was 89. And in her long and rewarding life we find a reminder of this frequent and happy occurrence: Interesting folks often find other interesting folks and get married.
Marilyn was married to the legendary A.R. “Babe” Schwartz, who spent 20 years representing Galveston in the Texas Senate (after four years in the Texas House) until he was ousted by Republican J.E. “Buster” Brown in 1980. What’s not to like about an election pitting a Buster against a Babe?
Babe was a progressive back when progressives were called liberals. And he was a liberal back in 1980 when the Reagan wave swept lots of folks like that out of office. ....
