Q: You’ve led the police board and have even challenged the police department in certain scenarios. Where do you feel you’re leaving things as you prepare to depart?
A: I feel positive. It’s really never been about me in the role of chair. I think it’s been about working with the LPS (London police service) to do better and be better. We’ve been fortunate that LPS admin and (police) Chief (Steve) Williams have been committed to this process.

About two years ago, Suzanne noticed that her daughter was getting thinner and thinner. The Ottawa resident suspected that her daughter, then 14, had developed bulimia. By December 2019, she was struggling to get out of bed and looked gravely ill. Her parents were worried about her heart: purging a symptom of bulimia that can involve self-induced vomiting, laxative misuse, and other behaviours can cause imbalances of the electrolytes that help maintain a regular heart rhythm.
In January 2020, Suzanne’s daughter agreed to go on a wait-list for an eating-disorder clinic at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. About two months later, as COVID-19 began upending the world, their family doctor instructed her to go to the emergency room immediately. She was admitted to the hospital’s inpatient eating-disorder program later that day. ....

When the Ford government announced on April 16 it was giving police officers additional powers to stop, question and issue fines to people who violated the province’s newly announced stay-at-home orders, reaction from the London police services board was swift.
Board chair Javeed Sukhera was on the phone with police Chief Stephen Williams shortly after the unexpected declaration, hashing through what London’s response should be. By early Friday evening, Sukhera and board vice-chair Susan Toth were hard at work on a statement that, by day’s end, would be ratified by the police board’s other members. ....

Local police forces say they will not randomly stop people

A day after sweeping new COVID-19 restrictions were announced, police forces across Ontario, including services throughout Southwestern Ontario, have stated they will not randomly stop people.
The province’s Solicitor General, Sylvia Jones, granted the authority as part of the province’s bid to put a lid on soaring COVID-19 case counts in Ontario.
For the chair of London’s Police Services Board- it hit close to home.
I personally, as a health worker in this community experience this distress, said Dr. Javeed Sukhera. My own children wonder if we can take a walk to the park in the middle of everything that’s going on. ....

Woodstock police will not conduct random COVID-19 stops: Chief

Woodstock police officers will not conduct random stops of citizens out of their homes during the COVID-19 lockdown, police chief Daryl Longworth said Saturday, joining a growing number of police forces pushing back against the measure.
In a statement, Longworth said that while they are waiting more information on the new powers afforded to police to enforce provincial stay-at-home orders, officers will be focused on “engagement and education.”

“We will not be conducting random vehicle or individual stops,” Longworth said.
“We will review those new regulations to determine the most appropriate enforcement response for the people in this community.
