Boeing reported a wider than expected first-quarter loss on Wednesday and took another charge on its program to build two new Air Force One presidential planes after firing a contractor it hired to help perform the work. The company did not provide a timetable for fixing the latest problem with its 737 Max jet, an electrical issue that has forced airlines to park more than 100 of the planes. The combination of self-inflicted damage and a coronavirus pandemic that has depressed demand for new planes pushed Boeing to its sixth straight quarterly loss. However, CEO David Calhoun said the company is at an “inflection point,” with an increase in vaccinations against COVID-19 raising hopes for a rapid recovery in air travel that could translate to aircraft orders. With Bain Capital first in line to buy a unit of Hitachi (HTHIF) , and CVC Capital Partners launching a bid to take Toshiba (TOSBF) private, it s clear Western venture capitalists are finally making inroads in deals involving Japan Inc.
Toshiba is considering a US$20 billion offer from CVC to delist it and turn it into a private company. Toshiba s current CEO, former banker Nobuaki Kurumatani, joined the Japanese conglomerate in 2018 from CVC, which is based in Luxembourg. Taking the company private would lift some of the pressure that Toshiba currently faces from hedge funds that hold its stock. ....

TOKYO, April 8 (Reuters) - Japanese industrial conglomerate Hitachi Ltd picked a group led by Bain Capital as the preferential bidder for its metals unit in a deal likely to top 800 billion yen ($7.3 billion), Nikkei reported on Thursday.
Bain, Japan Industrial Partners and Japan Industrial Solutions are considering buying a 53% stake in Hitachi Metals , the financial daily said.
Hitachi Metals recently announced it was buying U.S. software company GlobalLogic for $9.6 billion. But in recent years it has also been divesting domestic hardware assets, including chemical and imaging businesses, aiming to pivot to services instead. ....
