The dreadnought was conceived in an era of rapid change, development, and evolution in battleship design. The 19th century was a transitional period in warship design. Building materials such as wood eventually gave way to steel, and ships whose motive power had been wind gave way to ships that could propel themselves via steam. As for the idea of the dreadnought, few of the proposals were able to reach the naval authorities; those that did were primarily rejected on the grounds that they would render the battlefleet prematurely obsolete. Premature obsolescence was a major concern to countries like Great Britain, which had large, expensive battlefleets. Many of the designs were isolated efforts rather than cumulative studies. Possibly, this was why the all-big-gun-ship was never built during the 19th century. ....
