Hong Kong (CNN)A Hong Kong court has sentenced Joshua Wong and three other activists to between four and 10 months in prison for participating in an unauthorized rally last year to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.
This is the first time prominent activists have been jailed over the peaceful candlelight vigil, which has been held annually in Hong Kong’s Victoria Park since 1990. Police banned the event for the first time last year, citing coronavirus risks, but thousands staged a peaceful rally in the usual place. ....

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong and three others pleaded guilty on Friday to charges related to their participation in last year’s June 4 vigil commemorating the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre.
Wong, a prominent pro-democracy activist, is already serving a sentence of 17 months in prison, having been sentenced to 13 months imprisonment for organizing an illegal assembly during the height of the 2019 anti-government protests. This sentence was extended by four months on April 13 after Wong pleaded guilty to fresh charges of unauthorized assembly and violating an anti-mask law.
The other activists who pleaded guilty in the District Court on Friday were Lester Shum, Jannelle Leung and Tiffany Yuen. ....

Authorities at a second Hong Kong university have cut ties with the student union, saying that it had become a “platform for political propaganda” following its involvement in recent protest movements.
“The Hong Kong University Students’ Union (HKUSU) has become increasingly politicized in recent years, utilizing the University campus as a platform for its political propaganda,” the University of Hong Kong said in a statement on Friday.
“It has repeatedly made inflammatory and potentially unlawful public statements and unfounded allegations against the University,” it said.
“The university strongly condemns HKUSU’s radical acts and remarks,” the statement said. ....
