Carbajal introduces bill to fund safe parking programs around the country

A new bill could help local cities launch and operate safe parking programs for the homeless, programs similar to those that have popped up throughout San Luis Obispo County since the pandemic’s start.
At a press conference in Santa Barbara on May 3, U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) introduced the Naomi Schwartz Safe Parking Program Act, which, if passed, would establish a grant program that cities and counties could utilize for safe parking programs.

Johnson & Johnson vaccine pause holds up some local shots

On Friday, April 9, a pop-up vaccine clinic in Atascadero helped inoculate a few dozen unhoused North County community members for COVID-19.
Hosted by the El Camino Homeless Organization (ECHO), with assistance from the Community Health Centers of the Central Coast (CHC), the clinic used the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine on ECHO dinner and shower program participants.
We determined with Public Health that Johnson & Johnson would be best for that population, because it s a one-time only, ECHO CEO Wendy Lewis told
New Times. We ve been working super closely with Public Health and CHC to try to figure out the best way to take vaccines to the population we serve. ....

Grover Beach plans big changes at Ramona Park

A NEW VISION Grover Beach plans to demolish an existing gazebo at Ramona Garden Park and replace it with fitness and educational space, along with the addition of a new playground and enhanced amphitheater.
At a meeting on March 22, Grover Beach City Council approved the city s capital improvement program for fiscal years 2022-26, a plan that outlines a schedule for expenditures and projects estimated to cost $50,000 or more that could be completed in the next four years. The plan includes roughly 22 projects proposed for fiscal year 2022, including improvements to the police station, City Hall, street and storm drain maintenance, and water main upgrades. ....

SLO County supervisors make Cave Landing a park, approve management plan

San Luis Obispo County-owned land at Cave Landing near Avila Beach is now part of the county’s park system.
The County of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department will move ahead with its plan to manage and improve the Cave Landing area after it received March 16 approval from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors.
Director for SLO County Parks, Nick Franco, said if the department can get all the grant funding and bids, significant improvements can begin at the site.
“So the management goal overall has been to protect the natural character of the site and maintain it as a safe area so that people could access the beach, the cave, the trails and also enjoy the views of the coast and the sky that are up there,” Franco said. ....
