TALLAHASSEE A last-minute push to block former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz from clinching the chairmanship of the Florida Democratic Party is taking shape just a day before he is expected to secure the post amid a flurry of high-profile endorsements.
Diaz, a prominent Miami Cuban, made a splashy entrance into the race in late November, bringing in a handful of well-known staffers, and endorsements ranging from former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a billionaire who spent $100 million in Florida during the 2020 election cycle, and South Florida billionaire Jorge Pérez. Ione Townsend Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo, who torpedoed the party into losing five seats in the Florida House and two congressional seats last election, will not seek another term. And now it seems Hillsborough County Democratic Chairwoman Ione Townsend wants a shot at helming this wildly dysfunctional political machine.
In a Thursday announcement, Townsend highlighted the party’s success in adding voters, raising plenty of cash and flipping local offices during her tenure as Hillsborough Chair, a position she s held since 2015.

Hillsborough County Democratic Party Chair Ione Townsend announced this week she’s running for chairman of the state party, rolling out endorsements by Tampa Bay and I-4 corridor party officials.
Townsend said in an interview she believes there is a path for her to win the crowded race to replace outgoing state party Chair Terrie Rizzo.
“There is no true progressive in the race that has the experience and success that I have,” Townsend said. “I don’t espouse my ideology loudly, but I am clearly on the left of the ideological scale.” ....
